Daniels congratulates Mayor Kelly, urges support for equal marriage rights
Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly
1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20004
Dear Mayor Kelly:
On behalf of everyone in the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to you and your husband on the occasion of your recent marriage. We wish you a long and happy union.
As someone who works overtime in service of my community, I know from personal experience that a busy schedule requires an extra measure of spousal tolerance and understanding. You are to be admired -- and perhaps envied a bit -- not only for having found such a partner, but for having managed to protect your privacy while being so much in the public eye.
The subject of relationships brings another happy news item to mind. The recent appeals-court victory in Minnesota by Karen Thompson in having her relationship to her disabled partner Sharon Kowalski finally accorded the respect it deserves, reminds us of how hard Gay men and Lesbians still must fight to win equal protection under the law.
You have inspired our community and won its respect with your outspoken determination to be the mayor of everyone in this city. In this regard, perhaps now would be the perfect time to affirm your support for the right of Gay men and Lesbians to enjoy the same benefits and responsibilities of marriage as everyone else in our city.
In closing, may I say that, from what I have been hearing from friends since your surprise wedding announcement, you appear to have broken a lot of women's hearts!
Warmest regards,
Mindy A. Daniels
