Brent Minor is Executive Director of Team DC, established in 2003 to educate the LGBT community on the benefits of individual and team sports. Under his direction, the organization has initiated a College Scholarship Program for LGBT student-athletes, the Night OUT Sports Series -- with over 4000 participants annually -- as well as providing ongoing support for local teams, tournaments and numerous other sports-related activities.
Minor has also been an active participant in the Gay Games movement and served as the Chair of the 2014 Washington DC Bid Committee. In addition to competing in 5 Gay Games (1990-2006), Minor also served on the international Federation of Gay Games Board of Directors for several years and briefly as the Co-President of the organization.
Minor is a longtime community activist, and a member of the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS. He served on the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the only member of President Clinton’s Advisory Council reappointed by President Bush. He is also the former Director of the Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia and served for many years as Director of Community Relations at Food & Friends.
Minor, though diagnosed HIV+ in 1987, has maintained an active lifestyle, completing 35 triathlons (Olympic distance), 5 AIDS Rides, 2 marathons, and 5 Gay Games triathlons since then, inspiring many.
It has been said that there is no I in “team.” But Brent’s work and achievements over the years stand out. It is my honor to present GLAA’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award to Brent Tucker Minor.
