Rosendall presents award to Clarence J. Fluker

Distinguished Service Award to Clarence J. Fluker

Presented by GLAA President Rick Rosendall

GLAA 42nd Anniversary Reception
Washington Plaza Hotel
Thursday, April 25, 2013

Clarence J. Fluker is the communications and special initiatives director at Serve D.C. — the Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism. He is also the editor of Substance and Style DC dot com, an art, culture, entertainment and lifestyle blog. His articles have been featured in SWERV and The Life magazines, and he has served as the Next Generation editor for Arise. He was Program Manager of the D.C. Office of GLBT Affairs from 2008 to 2012.

In 2002 Clarence became the youngest member of the Board of Directors of Black Lesbian & Gay Pride Day, and served as its board president in 2006. His essay "A Nation Divided" appears in the acclaimed anthology Spirited from Redbone Press. He is a member of the American University Black Alumni Alliance Leadership Council, the Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens GLBT Advisory Committee, and the Young Professionals Board for Life Pieces to Masterpieces. He has worked with the Victory Fund, National Youth Advocacy Coalition, Hoop Dreams, and ACLU of Ohio.

Clarence was interviewed last week by the Blade. Asked what he would do if science discovered a way to change sexual orientation, he answered: "Nothing." He advises LGBT movement leaders to spend time with Dr. King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." His favorite LGBT movie is "Punks" by Patrick Ian Polk, so I assume he shares my admiration for actor Rockmond Dunbar. Clarence tells us that he would walk across hot coals for student loan forgiveness. Okay, someone needs a rich husband.

In the meantime, we are happy to call forward this industrious and gracious man for acclamation. It is my honor to present Clarence J. Fluker with GLAA's Distinguished Service Award.
