Peter Rosenstein is known for his commentaries in various online and print publications. But his work in our community goes much further. He has been a tireless activist in politics, government affairs, and the arts for more than thirty years. He is president of the Campaign for All DC Families. He is founder and president of Arts in Action, and was Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of the District of Columbia. He served on Whitman Walker Health's Development Committee and chaired the host committee for the Food and Friends annual dinner for nine years. He has worked for many candidates including DC Mayors Williams, Fenty, and Gray, as well as presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and, after the primaries ended, Barack Obama. Peter has led a number of non-profits in the fields of health and education.
In 2004, the first proposed ballot measure against marriage equality was filed in the District. It was withdrawn for being improperly drafted, but it served as a warning that we needed to prepare for similar measures. One thing we needed was to conduct voter research. We held the first planning meeting at Peter's apartment. The polling that the Foundation for All D.C. Families conducted was not high profile, but it helped guide our messaging and contingency planning. This is an example of how Peter steps up, often behind the scenes. When he takes on a chore, you can count on him to do a thorough job. He sets an admirable example for volunteerism in the public interest.
It is my honor to present Peter D. Rosenstein with GLAA's Distinguished Service Award.
