Distinguished Service Award to Metropolitan Community Church of Washington

Presented by GLAA Vice President for Administration Kevin Davis

GLAA 35th Anniversary Reception
Washington Plaza Hotel
Thursday, April 20, 2006

Greetings, Greetings and Greetings. My name is Kevin Davis, I serve as GLAA Administrative Vice President.

Thank you for supporting GLAA good works. I now have the pleasure of presenting a Distinguished Service Award to a very worthy organization, one that is most beloved in the hearts and souls of its members and our local GLBT community as a whole. I am speaking of The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington (MCC). A GLBT affirming Christian faith community within our nation’s capital.

MCC was chartered in 1971 by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. The church originally met in Rev. Paul Breton's home on Capitol Hill. A few years later it moved to the First Congregational Church, where it resided for a decade. In 1984, during the tenure of the late Pastor Larry Uhrig, the church purchased its first ministry center at 415 M Street, NW. It was during this time MCC came into it’s own with an earnest desire to expand its community outreach and offer multiple worship services.

MCC as a positive result outgrew its space and between 1987-1989 acquired several lots in the Shaw neighborhood. Construction began on a new ministry center at 5th and Ridge Streets, N.W. in December 1991. The new ministry center was dedicated in March 1993. Rev. Candace Shultis was elected Pastor in January 1995. Rev. Venson P. Mathews was named Associate Pastor also in 1995. MCC now has over 500 members and supporters.

Rev. Shultis is at home recovering from surgery. She sends her regrets that she could not attend our GLAA reception. Rev. Mathews do bring our sincerest regards for good health and recovery to Rev Shultis.

I am now honored to present Rev. Mathews on behalf of The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington with this GLAA Distinguished Service Award for 2006.
