GLAA urges WETA to stop appeasing anti-gay right

Dear Ms. Rockefeller:

We are writing to ask you to reconsider WETA’s refusal to air the episode of the “Postcards from Buster” series that has been blackballed by PBS, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Religious Right.

WETA’s refusal stands in unflattering contrast with the courage demonstrated by at least 45 other PBS affiliates, together accounting for more than half of PBS’ national audience, that are showing the targeted program despite the threats of the homophobes.

As you well know, families headed by same-sex couples are becoming increasingly common and visible. PBS’ excuse that they don’t want to expose children from “normal” families to this simple reality is a calculated slap in the face to our entire community.

WETA by its decision has bought into the double standards and demonizing rhetoric of the anti-gay right wing by tacitly accepting the notion that gay couples are to be reduced to their sexuality in a way that heterosexual couples are not. Same-sex couples are characterized by love and mutual care the same as with other couples; the primary difference is that they must do so in the midst of discrimination and constant public questioning of the legitimacy of their existence.

There is no excuse for WETA to take our money and then treat us like freaks and threats to children, or render us invisible. We were all children once ourselves, and among today's children are the next generation of gay and lesbian adults. What message is WETA sending those children by its cowardice? We say cowardice because we are rather sure that the vast majority of WETA staff and officials knows better than to swallow the poisonous propaganda of the anti-gay right.

We hope that the better angels of your nature will prevail in this matter.

Sincerely,

Kevin Davis
President
