Subject: | Heads up: Rep. Goode targets DPs in DC Appropriations bill |
Friends,
We learned late yesterday that Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) is trying to put back into the FY08 DC Appropriations bill the ban on federal funds for the Domestic Partnership registry. Rep. José Serrano (D-NY) had decently removed the ban as gratuitous. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill if it does not include the federal funds ban. The matter is expected to come up later this afternoon. GLAA supports Congresswoman Norton’s plan to fight Goode on principle, though a Goode win would just perpetuate the status quo (banning federal funds for DP registry but not local funds). Eleanor’s legislative director, David Grosso, asked me for some background info on DPs, so I sent him the link and talking points below. As always, we greatly appreciate the leadership and vigilance of the Congresswoman and her staff.

David,
Here are talking points that we drafted a few years ago in anticipation of election-year shenanigans by GOP members of Congress concerning DC:
