Council passes Councilmember Allen’s Emergency Legislation Protecting Women’s Health From Federal Threats

Pamgrace Gachenge, GLAA Vice President for Membership

We applaud DC councilmembers advocating for women’s rights and proactively ensuring the healthcare quality for all women. Yesterday, Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen introduced this legislation along with the 12 supporting councilmembers to protect Women’s Health Care Benefits required under the Affordable Care Act. These benefits include mammograms, screenings for cervical cancer, and prenatal care.

Councilmember Allen has been vocal about the increased importance of this emergency legislation and why it’s important to act now.  He states; “This Presidential administration is threatening to roll back basic, life-saving women’s health benefits by any means necessary”.  Additionally, “Just this week, we saw HHS Secretary Tom Price promise before a congressional committee that he’s going to do everything he can to take away coverage for women. We know benefits like cancer screenings and contraception improve health outcomes and lower spending. We need to make these critical benefits local law for District women now.”

We are honored to have councilmembers who understand the needs of the communities they serve and respond accordingly. In this moment, we affirm that women’s health matters!!! Join us in celebrating this milestone towards health care equality!
