You haven’t got it

My message for overconfident liberals, from Ben Bradlee by way of Jason Robards, Jr. (who won an Oscar for this role): You haven’t got it. You can pop the champagne cork, spike the football, invent a new hashtag or nickname for 45, whatever. There remains a long road ahead. It took more than two years after Woodward and Bernstein wrote their first news story on Watergate before Richard Nixon resigned. So buckle up.

Power concedes nothing without a fight. Frederick Douglass phrased that more gently. More than the special counsel and the congressional committees, what I most appreciate is the ongoing, assiduous work of journalists at The Washington Post and The New York Times. To paraphrase Edna St. Vincent Millay, the keys to the city are safe with you. Not through you shall we be overcome. Now back to work, as Mr. Bradlee would say.
